Louisiana State Police Commission
The Commission
The State Police Commission, which was created by Article 10, Section 41, et seq. of the Louisiana Constitution of 1974, is a seven member body that has final authority over the administration of the State Police Service.
The State Police Service ". . . includes all regularly commissioned full-time law enforcement officers employed by the Department of Public Safety and Corrections, office of state police, or its successor, who are graduates of the state police training academy course of instruction and are vested with full state police powers, as provided by law and persons in training to become such officers."
The Commission is empowered to make rules for the impartial administration and regulation of the State Police Service, to enforce and administer its rules and the Article and to adjudicate appeals of actions taken by the Appointing Authority (the Superintendent of State Police).
Six of the Commission members are appointed by the governor; the seventh is an employee representative elected by the classified members of the State Police Service. Each member serves a six year term. When choosing an appointed member, the Governor must select from a list of three people nominated by the president of one of the state's major private universities.
Commission meetings and hearings are open to the public, and are usually held as follows:
